Ups and Downs
one of those days again... PDF Print E-mail

One of those days again...

Just when you figure that you have sorted everything out because the error messages stop and things looks like they are all doing what they should... you walk out the door to go somewhere and no sooner you walk out the door, everything falls in a very messy pile!

Well, it seemed to be one of those days again today - I thought I had left the spam filtering in a state where people may be able to check the spam quarantine folders to see if they have missed any important stuff and instead of that happening, all the spam in the world seems to leak through my filtering instead! Not quite sure what I did but after cleaning everything and starting again I came across a few parameters that had changed without me knowing. Aparently my spam engine when politically correct or something and stopped allowing me to use "rebuild" and I had to change that to "sync"... Seems like my rebuilding the spam filtering has not been going according to plan for a few days and I had to clean out the filters and start again!

I think that it is right this time and I will be monitoring the whole mail log file and not just the "spam" lines which seemed to diminish each time I made a change (hence I thought I was winning!) lol

Nice to see spam being rejected and quarantined again... So if you need your domain changed so you can go through your spam (not for the feint of heart!) then let me know and I will add you to the list of spam I save and regurgitate!

Midnight Working Woes PDF Print E-mail

The Woes of working past midnight...

Sometimes it is just better to go to bed and wake up in the morning to see the big pile of mess... This time UK2.net seems to have gone off the face of the planet... Now I'm sure that somewhere there is a status message saying something is going to happen and that everything will be OK - but when you are trying to get a shopping cart working and in the middle of editing files that point to secure financial servers... you can't just say "Oh well, I'll wake up and fix it in the morning!"

So instead of doing that I have decided to write another blog entry on Kalendale to say "It's not my fault" again! ;-) And yes it is past midnight - but someone has to do it when people are asleep...

[update] An hour of down-time and no light at the end of the tunnel... thinks it's bedtime and we'll just have to face the flack in the morning... well, in a few hours time!!!

[update] Ok, so I overslept :-P

Network Outage PDF Print E-mail

Network / Server Outage [RESOLVED]

Due to a network problem the main Kalendale.com server has been unavailable from 14:50 through to 19:10 (roughly speaking). This outage was outside of my control - sorry.

The server continued to function albeit all by itself in a very lonely place - off the internet - so when the network was re-connected everything sprung back into life. During this time I set up a DNS switching system to switch the main kalendale.com and webspider.org sites across to a different server so that people could at least see that there was a problem. The DNS switching has worked very nicely but DNS time-to-live values need to be adjusted to make the switching a bit faster next time. Needless to say the server minitoring system spent 4 hours complaining about not being able to reach anything and had a tonne of emails waiting to send to me - hope I did not delete anything important in cleaning out my mailbox!

When I do get some down-time I will try to get backup sites running so that when/if this does happen again we can switch to backyp machines and continue working without too much interruption.

Regards

-DJ

DNS glitch PDF Print E-mail

Minor DNS Replication Glitch

Replication between Kalendale DNS servers suffered a few hours down-time between 5:20 and 7:20am this morning. This was due to a setting on the server that expired during the night effectively stopping the replication code. The setting was rectified and DNS replication continued.

NOTE: No DNS changes were done during that time. The only effective downtime was then in the error reporting stats!

Server Downtime

The people that host our servers are doing a bit or re-organisation and as such there will be some disruption to services at the following times and dates:

From 11:00pm on 17th March through to 06:00am on 18th March &

From 11:00pm on 30th March through to 06:00am on 31st March

I hope this does not cause too much grief but we will be in a better position after the re-organisation.
